Step 6: ordering supplies and furniture
Now order all the necessary materials and construction elements, unless these are obtained from the contracted craftsmen:
- Door / s
- window
- Floor and any necessary fastening material
- Afford
You can obtain or order paints, wallpaper, carpets, furniture and lights at a later date if necessary. Please note, however, that many pieces of furniture have a longer delivery time, so you should purchase or order furniture in line with your overall schedule.
Step 7: heating – 1st construction phase
If new heating pipes have to be laid in the bedroom, this should be done now so that the craftsmen don’t get in each other’s way.
Step 8: electrics – 1st construction phase
In the first construction phase of the electrical system, the cables are laid in walls, ceilings and / or floors. In this phase, caulking work is also carried out, which may be required for the installation of junction boxes, sockets, light switches or built-in lights. Additional connection lines for television and / or telephone / internet should also be laid now.
Step 9: installing new windows | Prepare the window
The installation of new windows in the bedroom is recommended at a time when the room is completely empty. The windows should definitely be installed before the new plastering in order to avoid new damage.
If the bedroom has wooden windows that are only to be repainted, now is the time to carry out all the necessary preparatory work.
Step 10: plastering the ceiling and walls
Anyone who has no experience with plastering walls and ceilings should entrust this task to a professional. Since the plaster should dry for at least 14 days after application before paint or wallpaper can be applied, plastering should be done now.
If there are stucco elements in the bedroom, now is the best time to repair or replace them.
Step 11: laying the floor (hard floor / sub-floor)
During the drying phase of the plaster, renovation of the floor in the bedroom can begin. Hardwood floors such as wooden planks, parquet or laminate can now be laid. If carpeting is to be added to the bedroom later and a sub-floor is provided for this, it can now be installed.
Step 12: installing built-in wardrobes
If built-in wardrobes are to be installed in the bedroom, they should now be installed before the baseboards are installed.
Step 13: woodwork
After the plaster is completely dry, the installation of baseboards, door frames and doors, picture moldings and similar elements can be done. – The route of cables and pipes in the walls must be known or taken into account so that a line is not accidentally damaged.
Step 14: painting work
Now it is time to fill up small cracks and level out any remaining unevenness before painting ceilings, walls and wooden elements and / or applying wallpaper.
Step 15: heater | Electrics – 2nd construction phase
Now the electrician can assemble the sockets, switches and lights and the heating installer can take care of the installation and commissioning of the radiator or radiators.
Step 16: finishing touches in the room
Finally, the remaining and small work such as the attachment of curtain rods and roller blinds, the assembly of door handles, the laying of the carpet and the like are done.
Step 17: setting up the furniture | decoration
Finally the renovated bedroom is “ready to move into” and furniture, decorative objects and home accessories can fill the room with function and “life”.

Electrical installations
In Germany there is the so-called low-voltage connection ordinance, which in §13 basically prohibits lay people from setting up, changing or repairing electrical systems that are connected to the public electricity supply network.
If this is interpreted strictly, it means that by law no electrical installations are allowed to be carried out, which also includes, for example, the replacement of sockets or light switches. However, if you carry out this work yourself as a craftsman, you do not have to fear prosecution in practice. However, it can become critical if damage occurs after you have installed it yourself because it was incorrectly carried out. In this case, you may lose your insurance coverage.
Heater
The work on the heating or the heating installation should also be left to professionals. This applies in particular to activities relating to the heating system, working on gas pipes or laying pipes. Sometimes these tasks are more complex and time-consuming than expected and mistakes can cost you dearly in various ways.
As a tenant you should always keep your hands off such things. If you live in your own home, you should only work on and around the heating yourself if you have sufficient experience and specialist knowledge.
