History and Evolution of Shoes

Like many other inventions, objects and customs, the appearance of the shoe dates back to ancient civilizations. Then, the shoe was not only used to protect the feet but was a symbol that marked differences between humans. In Egypt, only the pharaoh and dignitaries could wear shoes. In Greece, were free men who used shoes, while in Rome the slaves went barefoot and criminals did so with heavy wooden shoes. At this time, the shoe was worn sandal, although there was also another type of shoe, boot. Are the Greeks who began to adapt to all kinds of shoes foot and activity: for warriors, for priests … This variety in footwear adopted by Greece will be generalized for Rome, where the meaning of the shoe expands and becomes status symbol or amulet for good luck. In the Middle Ages a change in the use that is given to footwear. Any symbolic meaning is ignored and begins to gain strength taste for aesthetics. Or what is the same, the shoe begins to be an element extolling the virtues or cover possible defects in the feet. In this age are becoming public figures who marked fashion. Godofredo Plantagenet wore leggings to hide an excrescence on the toe according to searchforpublicschools.com.

Charles VIII wore square – toed heels to cover his feet six fingers. Louis XIV becomes fashionable shoe heel in order to hide his short height. But if they were monarchs who set the pace of fashion, in the eighteenth century in the Middle Ages an event will be the benchmark for the shoe: the French Revolution. It seeks a comfortable shoe. Thus the heel gives its way to the flat shoe, the narrow boots and sandals linked strips (reminiscent of ancient Rome). With the gradual prevailing industrial development in the nineteenth century , new models and ways to make shoes appear. Since the late 30s begins to gain strength loot like the shoe covers or gaiter is created. It is at this time that a model that leave an indelible mark appears: the Oxford shoes. No doubt that is an important time for the shoe: the machinery used by beginning to speak of a footwear industry since the late nineteenth century mass production was even given. At this time, order a pair of shoes to a craftsman was a sign of social distinction. The twentieth century will be the century of women ‘s shoe. Gradually the women enter the public sphere partly because they have to work to replace men marching to war. It becomes fashionable and practical androgynous look: returns on shoes. Proliferating wars in this century cause is a shortage of materials: leather is replaced by other less noble materials. With the 50 reaches the stiletto heel or stiletto, which again is again high and subtle, while the low shoe called “dancer” is broadcast through mass media such as film (Audrey Hepburn all wore in “Sabrina” ). It will be a decade later when they return high shoes: moccasins, high platforms … and, gradually, it is showing a trend that is what marks the last decades of the twentieth century and the present itself: variety, variety and variety. A shoe for every occasion and for every one.
